Unedumacated People

Today in my Education 115: Embracing Diversity discussion, we summed up our class with 5 minute presentations about what we learned through the class. I talked about the everlasting battle between individuals in society that lead to oppression and privileges that go unnoticed. We overlook them and this class has brought forth the topics of sexism, racism, diversity in religions and so much more. I found it easy to talk for 5 minutes about a class I had a dozen 1 hour 15 minute discussions along with a supplementary same length discussion every Tuesday. Today showed me that this class was for absolutely nothing for my peers. It was just a class where everything was glanced at rather than fully embracing it. This whole post got its start in my head when a girl started talking about anti-Semitism and talked about how in Boston there was recently an outbreak of “Swastickers” in Jewish communities! I bet she couldn’t even identify a swastika. We talked on this subject for a long time and explained that even though we don’t have a Holocaust type event today, Jewish people are still oppressed. I was absolutely ashamed when I heard that she identified herself as someone from “Jewish descent who has gotten in touch of her roots and can embrace her heritage now because of this class.” Also there was a girl how explained how coming into the class she thought the terms “oppression and privilege are vague” when explaining how they really work in our society. It makes sense to me and is something I realized but this girl who is an upperclassman ready to graduate pronounced this word a vag (rhymed with bag and sag). I have little confidence in my generation after seeing 1-2 minute scripted talks where no one really knew what they were saying and could not stop laughing since she was extremely uncomfortable. There were many who did phenomenal jobs but to see a girl claim she has done research into her heritage and hates that people still make “Swastickers” and a senior start her speech with uncollected thoughts, constantly laughing and could not present in front of class and then pronounce the word vague “Vag” (like Bag again), it really made me feel bad for my generation.
